Our Company

At Boehringer Ingelheim we develop breakthrough therapies and innovative healthcare solutions in areas of unmet medical need for both humans and animals. As a family owned company, we focus on long-term performance. We believe that, if we have talented and ambitious people who are passionate about innovation, there is no limit to what we can achieve; after all, we started with just 28 people. Now, we are powered by 50,000 employees globally who nurture a diverse, collaborative and inclusive culture.

The position

As part of our growing Computational Innovation (@computationalinnovation) function you can step into a world of digital innovation, data-driven approaches and cutting-edge computational science at Boehringer Ingelheim, where you will be part of a global, multicultural and open-minded community working together to transform the future of cancer therapy.

We are seeking an inspiring and strategically minded leader to head our Computational Biology team dedicated to Cancer Target Discovery. In this role, you will lead a talented group of computational biologists who operate at the forefront of cancer research, driving the in-silico identification and validation of novel therapeutic targets. Working in close partnership with research biologists, data scientists, oncologists, and data engineers, your team will leverage large-scale multimodal datasets, spanning disease models, patient cohorts, and perturbation studies, to generate deep biological insights that shape our oncology portfolio. This is a unique opportunity to lead scientific direction, build team capabilities, and drive innovation that directly impacts future cancer medicines.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of computational biologists
  • Define and drive the computational strategy for cancer target discovery, aligned with portfolio needs
  • Collaborate closely with experimental biologists, oncologists, geneticists, data scientists/engineers to design studies, generate interpretable datasets, and iterate on findings
  • Drive the application of modern ML/AI and statistical modeling to integrative multi-omics (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, single-cell), imaging, and clinicogenomic data
  • Represent the team in cross-functional research initiatives, external collaborations, and scientific forums.

Requirements

  • PhD in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related discipline
  • Proven track record (5+ years) of leadership in a computational biology or data science setting, preferably in oncology.
  • Expertise in machine learning/AI, statistical modeling, and integrative analysis applied to multi-omics datasets.
  • Strong foundation in cancer biology, including target discovery and validation concepts (e.g., CRISPR/perturbation screens, pathway/network inference, biomarker strategies)
  • Collaborative leader with excellent people skills, stakeholder management, and a track record of delivering impact at program/portfolio level

Your Benefits

  • Flexible working time models: home office and flexible working hours, depending on department and position – many things are possible with us.
  • Additional days off (“bridge-days”): more free time through additional days off to bridge single working days between bank holidays and the weekend – without having to use vacation days.
  • Canteen & Cafeteria: whether it's coffee and croissant for breakfast, various lunch menus or snacks in between – our subsidized staff restaurant & cafeteria has something for every taste including vegetarian and vegan options.
  • Learning & development: diverse training and development opportunities for your personal and professional growth. Because: you never stop learning.
  • Health promotion: health is important to us – that's why we offer different programs to promote physical and mental health.
  • Public transport ticket: we encourage our employees to use public transport on their daily way to work. Costs for public transport? We cover them!

The remuneration for this position starts at EUR 108.000 gross annual target salary per year (full time). The actual salary package depends on professional experience and qualifications. We will be happy to discuss further details in person.
