(Associate) Principal Scientist (m/f/d) Bioinformatics Infrastructure Engineer, Agentic AI
Boehringer Ingelheim RCV GmbH & Co KGOur Company
At Boehringer Ingelheim we develop breakthrough therapies and innovative healthcare solutions in areas of unmet medical need for both humans and animals. As a family owned company, we focus on long-term performance. We believe that, if we have talented and ambitious people who are passionate about innovation, there is no limit to what we can achieve; after all, we started with just 28 people. Now, we are powered by 50,000 employees globally who nurture a diverse, collaborative and inclusive culture.
The position
Computational Innovation (@computationalinnovation) is a global organization with sites in Vienna, Biberach, London, and Ridgefield, focused on advancing AI and data-driven scientific discovery. At our Vienna location, we are growing the Data Excellence team and are recruiting a Bioinformatics Infrastructure Engineer to design and operate robust, scalable bioinformatics data platforms while driving the enablement of agentic AI systems in scientific workflows. The role sits at the intersection of large-scale bioinformatics data engineering and agentic AI, ensuring that FAIR, well-governed biomedical data can be safely and compliantly accessed, reasoned over, and acted upon by autonomous AI agents. You will work closely with computational biologists, data scientists, and AI/ML teams to support complex end-to-end workflows across large-scale omics, clinical, imaging, and phenotypic data domains.
Tasks & responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain scalable bioinformatics data infrastructure, including data models, storage, and compute environments, supporting the full data lifecycle from ingestion through downstream analytics.
- Engineer end-to-end data processing and integration pipelines for large and complex internal and external biomedical datasets in alignment with FAIR principles.
- Build and operate infrastructure components, data access layers, and APIs that enable agentic AI systems to securely integrate biomedical data, support retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and memory, and execute multi-step bioinformatics workflows.
- Take end-to-end ownership of selected infrastructure services and data assets, ensuring reliability, observability, thorough documentation, and continuous improvement in production environments.
- Collaborate closely with computational biology and AI teams to translate scientific workflows into robust, auditable, and agent-compatible infrastructure abstractions while maintaining high scientific rigor.
Requirements
- MSc or PhD (preferred) in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, or a related quantitative field; a PhD is not required, but candidates should demonstrate equivalent depth through the scale and complexity of their practical experience.
- Proven experience designing and operating bioinformatics data infrastructure for large-scale omics datasets, combined with strong expertise in HPC and cloud environments, containerization, and workflow orchestration.
- Experience building agentic AI systems (e.g. autonomous agents, tool use, multi-step planning) and translating scientific problems into safe, compliant, production-grade infrastructure using modern agent frameworks.
- Experience working with oncology or other therapeutic-area datasets is a strong advantage.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams across bioinformatics, AI, and the life sciences.
