Master Thesis - 3D CFD Modeling of Spray Quenching
What we offer you
Spray quenching is a key process in cooling applications and SCR exhaust aftertreatment systems. To improve our understanding of the underlying physics, a numerical 3D CFD model of a spray quenching test bench will be developed using AVL Fire M. The work focuses on simulating the interaction between a hot gas flow and water spray injection. The study provides hands-on experience in multiphase flow simulation, droplet evaporation, spray-wall interaction, and heat transfer modeling.
- Develop a 3D model of a test bench tube with hot gas flow in AVL Fire M
- Implement and parametrize water injection using Lagrangian parcels
- Perform CFD simulations for 6 operating conditions:
- Low-temperature case (290ºC) with three spray dosing rates (250 g/h, 500 g/h, 2000 g/h)
- Moderate dosing case (500 g/h) with varying gas temperatures (290ºC, 350ºC, 400ºC, 450ºC)
- Analyze results regarding temperature distribution, droplet evaporation and spray–flow interaction
- Compare and discuss results with physical expectations and
experimental data
What we look for
- Master’s student in Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy Technology or a related field
- Background in fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer
- Basic knowledge of CFD; prior experience with AVL Fire M or comparable software is an advantage
- Independent, structured and analytical working style
